Enjoy the Natural Landscape Around Stanley, Idaho

If you have covered all the well-known and populous cities in the US, it might be time to visit some lesser known but unique cities that lie in the different states in this nation. Stanley is one such town located in Custer County of Idaho. It has a small population and could be a reason that you would not see it on the list of popular tourist destinations of the country. However, this town has an interesting history and landscapes that are worth discovering as well as a native and long standing culture and community which makes it unique.

Fur trappers discovered this area first, the Stanley area which was initially avoided because beavers were rare here. The site was also excavated for gold in the nineteenth century; till 1919 it was not considered a town after which it was recorded and surveyed to be recognized as a town. The Sawtooth national recreation area is closely connected to this region. Much about life here has been described in Traplines: Coming home to the Sawtooth valley as written by John Rember.  A friend of ours, Sarah who owns an Albany roofing company called Ultimate Roofing, visited a couple years back with her husband Tommy, and the kids and they had a blast.  Really enjoyed the outdoor scenario and low key pace of life…

There are several places rich in natural beauty that is around and nearby in Stanley area such as:

  • Goat Lake in Idaho is an alpine lake located in Custer County in Idaho. It is in the midst of the Sawtooth Mountains and part of the Sawtooth national recreation area. The lake is about 6 miles southwest to Stanley. It is a glacial lake that flows out of the Salmon river; it is a beautiful lake with surrounding landscape that offers breathtaking beauty.
  • Williams Peak is one of the highest peaks of Sawtooth mountains. It is discovered when you plan a visit or a weekend stay at the Sawtooth national recreation area. The peak is part of the wilderness portion of the national park and many enjoy hiking along its many trails.
  • Little Redfish lake is another alpine lake to visit here, which is in between Custer County and Sawtooth national recreation area.
  • Stanley Museum is a history museum that is a must visit when you come here. It is a museum that has several interactive as well as historical artifacts.

Tulum – a Beach Town by Yucatan Peninsula

Image result for tulum mexico

Tulum is a beach town that is beautiful and lay back as I discovered when I spent a day here while traveling across the Yucatan Peninsula. Located south of Cancun, it is by the Riviera Maya, marking the southern boundary of that region. Tulum is known for its beaches and for a hippie vibe that is apparent here. I enjoyed the cliff top views where it stretches out the turquoise ocean waters.

Places to see

Tulum has ruins of the Mayan civilization that one can visit. I would suggest that you take a guided tour of the area so that you can get insight into the ancient history of the place.

Day trip to Sian Ka’an would be a good idea as it is a nature preserve that is a biosphere area declared by UNESCO. There are wildlife tours to take here as well as swimming in clear waters and bird watching that one can spend their leisure time doing.

I also visited the Gran Cenote which is by the Coba ruins; opt for a guided tour here for a meaningful insight into its history.

Activities to do

I enjoyed several outdoor activities here. For instance, there are sea turtles by the beaches where one can observe them in their natural habitat. I went swimming, snorkeling as well as cave diving since there are several underground rivers in this region.

I also rented a bicycle to explore the beachfront; there are sweat lodges which are like spas. You could also try to stop by the Cabanas Copal which has steam spas as well. Hotel zone here includes several ocean view properties. Opt for one as per your budget and other preferences.

Baden Baden: Experiencing The Best Of The Spa Town

This time for my vacation, I decided to visit the best spa town in the world, Baden Baden. The spas are mineral-rich and this is what makes it famous from the Roman times. It is also one of the most magnificent towns that you can visit in the world. The city filled me with some unique vibrancy. In case you are planning to visit Baden Baden any time soon, here are some things that you should check out.

Lichtentaler Allee

This is a park that you will find at the center of the city. It is on the bank of Oos River. This park is just filled with various trees. A stroll among nature wasn’t a bad idea after all. Do not miss out on the Gönneranlage, the garden that has more than 400 different types of roses. Isn’t that something great?

Merkur Bergbahn

Visiting Baden Baden and not visiting the steepest and the longest funicular railway which carries people to the summit of Merkur Mountain would have been a mistake. When you reach the top, you can take a lift to the platform to view where you can get a glimpse of the panorama of the city of Karlsruhe, the upper Rhine, and the Black Forest Mountain. Just lie down over the grass to breathe in the fresh air of nature. There is also a playground for children.

Altes Schloss Hohenbaden

Hohenbaden Castle had been built in 1102. Having a countryside surrounding, the castle offers an incredible view. It had been made by the Margraves of Limburg. You will be surprised to know that there are over 100 rooms in this castle. Visit this historical site to spend some among the decorative ruins. To get a panoramic view, I climbed up the tower. You can also visit the dungeon if you want. I am sure that this castle is never going to disappoint you.

Edmundston: The City For All Kinds Of Travelers

The hidden gem is in Madawaska. You will be surprised by the number of things that you can do and see in here. Starting from family-friendly activities to great adventurous tours, you will be able to experience it all. I realized it has something to offer to everyone. Irrespective of your style of travel, you are going to love Edmundston. Here are some of the few things to enjoy in the city.

  • Tour the historic Edmundston

Take a walk around the historic center. Within 6 block radius, you will be able to find all the main attractions. Get a tourist walking map from the tourist office and start walking.  There are two routes to avail, one covering the historic highlights and the other the shopping highlights. Being a history buff, I took the one with historical sites. At the back of the map, you will find details about the train station, 3 prime churches, the blockhouse, and the City Hall.

  • Go cycling

Up for some activities? Go on a walk in the Trans-Canada Trail. In case you are wandering along the downtown riverside, you are actually walking on this trail. Keep walking to reach the Bas-Saint-Laurent. This is two-trails in one and you can also go cycling. I went cycling at the Petit Temis Interprovincial Linear Park. It elevates to 1000m above sea level. The scenery around this trail is just gorgeous.

  • Travel back in time

With my interest in old vehicles, I landed in Antique Automobile Museum. There is a collection of vintage cars which is owned privately by a businessman. However, now it is open for public viewing. I took a guided tour to learn more about cars. From the remaining of Bricklins to the Model T Fords, you will find it all.
